NADDC Director General Calls for Inter-Ministerial Approach to Boost Auto Industry

Lagos, Nigeria – The Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Mr. Joseph Osanipin, has urged for a collaborative approach among relevant government agencies to address the challenges hindering the growth of Nigeria’s automotive industry.

During a four-day tour of automotive companies in Lagos and Ogun States on July 11, 2024, Osanipin emphasized the importance of synergy between ministries and agencies to create a conducive environment for industry stakeholders.

“We need to establish a unified platform where stakeholders can report challenges promptly, rather than navigating multiple agencies,” he stated. “This inter-ministerial approach will streamline processes and facilitate faster solutions.”

While acknowledging the immense potential of the local auto industry, Osanipin stressed the critical role of human capital development in its revitalization. He commended the efforts of many assemblers in providing training programs to equip Nigerian youth with the skills needed to build vehicles and convert gasoline-powered vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The Director General expressed optimism about the growing acceptance of CNG-powered vehicles in Nigeria, noting that increased adoption could attract more investors to the sector.

In line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” NADDC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting local vehicle and component production. Osanipin highlighted the benefits of transitioning from Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) to Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly, including increased employment opportunities, economic growth, and higher utilization of locally sourced components.

“We have the capabilities within Nigeria to develop a thriving automotive sector,” he concluded. “All we need is a concerted effort and a strategic approach.”

The CEOs of the visited factories expressed appreciation for the Director General’s efforts and the federal government’s support in advancing the automotive industry.
